Bio of Dave Winkler
I
have 5 children, ages 23 to 12. My
oldest son served a mission in Salvador, Brasil. He is married and attending
USU. My oldest daughter is studying to be a nurse at Weber State. The next son
is a senior in high school and has a scholarship to attend Snow College this
fall.
I
still live in the ward that I grew up in. I've been heavily involved in scouting
over the years. After the mission I served as secretary in two elder's quorums
and then as a seventies group leader just before they ended that calling. I was
a young men's president and a second counselor in the bishopric. Currently I
teach the High Priest group and lead the singing in sacrament meeting.
I
have taught Spanish for the past 18 years at Bear River Middle School. In order
to better support my family on teacher's wages, I enlisted in the Utah National
Guard, then became an officer. I specialized as a Spanish linguist and retired
in June after twenty years service. In addition to my involvement in Spanish, I
also teach English as Second Language to immigrants both during the day and in
evening classes.
I
have had the opportunity of going back to Panama five times with the military
and Honduras once.
I
graduated in 1981 from Weber State, then got my Masters of Education from Utah
State in 1987. A glutton for punishment, I finished a second bachelors in
Spanish in 1995.
I
served most of my mission in small "two elder towns" or in Panama
City. Over the past twenty years of visiting Panama with the military, it was great
to see the progress of the Church there. The last time I was there, there was a
stake in David, a stake in La Chorrera and two stakes in Panama City.
