Bio of Elizabeth (Buffy) Quinney Rains
Family:
Spouse: Michael J. Rains. Children:
John William - 21, Jeffrey Michael - 19, Christina -17, Paul Andrew – 13. We have been blessed with four wonderful
children who really were and are delightful teenagers. John and Jeff are attending BYU Idaho right now. Tina hopes to attend BYU next year. Paul is working toward his Eagle Scout and
does the hurdles in track. Jeff is a
gifted athlete, currently focusing on golf ‘til the weather turns. John served a mission in the Italy Rome
mission, a great adventure and nothing has been more rewarding than to swap
mission stories with him. John wants to
be an ER surgeon, Jeff a sports agent, Tina an archaeologist and Paul a Volcanologist.
Church: I'm currently an early morning Seminary
Teacher. A calling that I thoroughly
enjoy. I have been teaching the
freshman class for four years now and hope to continue for a long time. I have 25 students! It's great to start the day out with
scriptures and the grin they give me.
Mike is on the high council.
Education: When I'm finished with
"mommihood" in about 6 years, then I plan to get a Washington State
Teacher certificate so we can save toward retirement and a mission together! Mike
served a mission to the southern states just a year after his baptism and we
are anxious to go back as a companionship.
Work: I teach reading in an Elementary School with a
majority of Mexican Migrant children so I'm able to keep up my Spanish talking
with the kids and their parents. I truly
enjoy this job and am pleased because I only work the days and hours my own
kids are in school. Like my Dad used to
say, "the three best reasons for teaching are June, July, and
August." Hobbies: We have enjoyed living in the Seattle area. With Mt. Rainier, the ocean, and the
rainforest, there's so much beauty here, not to mention the Seattle
Mariners. We usually take in a game a
year. Most of our other hobbies really
revolve around our callings. We have
enjoyed studying the gospel for our callings.
Comps: Dahnelle Burton, Sherma Bunderson, Susan
Bliss, Miriam Delagneau, Vickie Chelson, Mercedes Martinez and Arleta
Turley. I hope I didn't leave anyone
out!
Areas Served: San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa, San Jose
(Guadalupe), La Chorerra.
Memories: When Dahnelle and I were both very green, we went tracting one day. I gave the door approach. The Dona said, "I can't understand a thing you're saying--get out of here." We sat down on a log and cried. We just didn't think we'd make it 18 WHOLE MONTHS! It's been a lot longer than 18 years since we've been home! I still use a lot of mission dichos like "geepear" and tocar puertas and "macanudo!" My son, John took Spanish in high school so we talked a lot of Spanish together. It sure mixed him up when he had to learn Italian because they are so close. We speak Spanish again now because he figures he'll get a lot more chances to use it. Of course, I've taught my husband all the mushy words, but he still can't roll his r's.
I can't think of any one incident right now. It all evokes wonderful feelings--even the
hard times crying on a log! I cry when
I see a new stake made. I use mission
experiences a lot in Seminary and the bishop has made me give several pep talks
to young women about going. I will be
thankful my whole life for two bishops who told me I needed to go and for
wonderful friendships I made there. I'm
sorry I won't be able to attend the reunion and see you all. I've spent a lot of time away from my family
the last two years nursing my mother and Mike just returned from a long
overseas business trip so I'm staying put, but anxious to hear from you all.
