Bio of Kevin Benson
When
Kevin returned from his mission, he enrolled in Arizona State University and
began working on his bachelors degree in accounting. Additionally, he married Lauri Whipple (the girl who had been waiting
for him) in August 1978 in the Mesa temple.
He graduated from ASU in May 1980.
Kevin became a CPA but found that he didn’t enjoy accounting all that much. Through an interesting turn of events, he began working for a software company (JDEdwards) and worked as a marketing consultant…a job that he loved and really excelled at.
Kevin served in the church in a variety of positions. Most frequently, he served with the Young
Men in one aspect or another. He was a
Scout Master for many years and was responsible for many YM earning their Eagle
awards (including his two sons). One of
his favorite callings was that of early morning Seminary teacher. He had a special rapport with his students
and an enthusiasm that is hard to match that early in the morning. He also served as High Priest Group
Assistant and Stake Financial Clerk.
Some of his hobbies included skiing and woodworking.
In the Spring of 1999, Kevin was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer with a very discouraging diagnosis. But with some superior physicians, and a lot of faith, fasting, and prayers, Kevin went forward with determination to beat the disease. He experienced a year of surgery and chemotherapy and finally the good news that we were hoping to hear: “you are cancer free.” But several months later, the cancer returned with a vengeance and there was nothing more the doctors could do for Kevin. With his ever positive attitude and incredible faith, Kevin faced death. It strengthened us as a family in ways that we didn’t think possible. Kevin passed away July 11, 2000 at our home in Corona, California.
Kevin had wonderful experiences and memories of his mission. I know he would have enjoyed attending the reunion and visiting with his friends and companions.
Lauri and Kevin have three children: Michael (23), Katie (22), and Jeff (18). Michael is a returned missionary from the New York, Utica mission and is currently attending BYU studying Computer Engineering. Katie married Spencer Smith in May 2002. They are both attending Utah State University and will graduate this spring…Katie in Communications and Spencer in Pre-Veterinary Studies. They are currently waiting to hear from graduate schools. Jeff is living at home and attending the local community college. He will leave on his mission in September (and will probably be gone by the time of the reunion.)
I am attending school myself and will graduate with a Bachelors degree this June and am starting a Masters Program in the Fall. I also am teaching early morning seminary for the third year.
