Here’s the latest from Loren Ashcraft: I think Loren deserves special thanks for
sticking through this unexpectedly lonnnnng project. I have viewed the DVD’s and they are well
worth the wait.
Happy
Holidays Everyone!
Well,
there's good news and there's better news. The good news is that the
project is finally finished! The better news is that it will ship
this week! You should have it in your hands in the next 7 to 10
days. If you haven't received it by then, send me an e-mail so
that I can solve the problem.
The
following is a letter that I have included in each of your mailings, but I
will include it here as well for reference. Thanks for all of your
support and encouragement over the past year. Have a great Christmas, and
enjoy the DVD's!
(Letter)
Enclosed please
find the long anticipated mission DVD/s you requested.
DVD #1 has the map of
DVD #2 has the palm
tree in
Both discs will play in a standard DVD player by simply inserting the disc and pressing “play” or “enter” when the menu screen appears. Each disc has a “Scene” menu in the standard DVD mode that will allow you to jump to different sections on the disc. It is accessed just like any regular DVD menu. There is also a section where both President Eagar and President Muren give us messages.
The high resolution picture and video files are accessible only by computer. To access the computer files, you must have a “DVD” drive in your computer. Double Click on “My Computer”, then Right Mouse Click the “DVD” drive which contains the disc, and choose “Explore” to see the files. The “readme” file in the photo directory will allow you to see who provided each photo.
Be careful not to scratch the
disc, or get your finger prints on it when handling it. If the disc skips or
pauses, check for finger prints or deep scratches. If it is dirty, clean it with a slightly damp
clean soft cloth. If you have any questions,
contact me at Ironrod@Comcast.net.
Thanks for your patience and support during the past year. I hope you will enjoy the video, and that it will bring back good memories and emotions from days gone by.
Have
a Very Merry Christmas, and a Happy
Sincerely,
Loren Ashcraft ![]()
Note: Some of the older first generation DVD players may not play this type of disc. If your disc fails to read, it may be your player. Take it to your local electronics store and try it there. If it will not play in a new player, then the disc itself may be faulty. Let me know and I will replace it. Also, at this point it is fairly easy to make additional discs if any of you need more.
Note from the webmaster: Here’s a sample of one of the 2500 pictures that I hadn’t seen of my LTM/MTC group. The DVDs are of excellent quality. I found the video of Pres Muren to be especially touching. It was great to see him and was just taped a couple of months ago (Oct 04).
September 2004:
Hello Everyone,
Hope everyone is well and happy! I just wanted to give you an update on the status of the DVDs. It appears that this has become a "career" project that never seems to end, but there is a lot of progress that has been made. When you are dealing with 2500 of anything, it takes some time, and I have come to discover that first hand.
I took vacation time in July as I reported to you earlier and spent 60 hours working on the project. Because I had to constantly color correct and touch up photos I was using in the multimedia show, I finally decided to spend a block of time, no more than I minute with each photo, color balancing and touching them all up. At one minute a piece, it took 40 hours to process all 2500 photos. The good news is that both projects will benefit from the improved photo quality. The bad news is that it is taking more time than I planned. Sorry.
In the process I discovered that a large number of photos were not included in the original photo DVD (DVD #2) and when I got them all included, the total playing time of the photo DVD with 2500 photos went from 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours and 20 minutes to view them all, and that's at 3.5 seconds only for each photo! I have divided the DVD into 50+ chapters so that you can search the DVD by topic and view sections at a time without having to see it all in one setting.
I managed
to get the 2 hours and 20 minutes on the DVD video part of the disk, and then
included 2500 high resolution JPG photo files in a directory on the same
disk. Instructions will be included with the DVD to help you view or print
the photos from a computer from the Hi-res files.
I have sent
this photo DVD (#2) out to half a dozen people to check it for problems or
mistakes before duplicating all of the disks. Final duplication and
shipping will happen when DVD #1 is ready.
DVD #1: I have put another 20+ hours
of work into DVD #1 (the multimedia show) in July, and I am estimating about 30
more to completion, however I am a little nervous about estimating anymore
because I have been so off on this project. Thank you everyone for you
continued patience. It should be worth it, to capture and share so much
of our mission experience. I am taking more vacation time this
coming week and should be able to get another 20 hours more work
completed. (my family is ready for this to be done too).
My current
goal is to have it completed and into duplication by Conference. YES,
it's almost been 1 year, and I, like you, am anxious to finally get the project
completed. (my family is too!)
We're
almost there!
Feel free
to email me with any questions.
Your servant
and friend (I hope),
Loren
July 2004:
4 July 2004 -
Here’s the latest from Loren on the DVD’s:
Hola Everyone, I
have been trying to get a minute to give everyone an update on the mission
DVDs, but haven't been able to until now. I have continued to
work on the DVD between assignments, and believe I am within 18 hours of
finishing. I have scheduled time off of work in July
(14th-23rd), when I will be able to finish the edit and begin the duplication
and distribution of both DVDs. Thanks for your patience and
understanding. I will get update information on the master list for
those of you who wanted to add to the order, and there should be an
updated mailing list for everyone to check right after I return from
Since I sent the
past update, I have been to
My kids haven't
seen much of me for a few months, so yesterday I took them and some of their
friends on a 14 mile hike up Mount Timpanogos to
April 2004:
The latest from Loren: April 14, 2004
Several weeks ago I was given a special assignment for General
Conference. It began the second week of March and has just ended this past
weekend. As a result I was only able to put 25 hours into the DVD Project since
my return from
Here is the current status:
DVD #1 (the Multimedia Show) is now 75% completed with about 35 hours more to go. I have been able to recover most of the "Pres. Eagar" video tape visit from before the reunion, and that will be included on DVD #1. DVD #2 (the Photo DVD) is in the replication (duplication) process. It will play all 2500 photos in a regular DVD player, and the high resoultion photo files will be accessable on a computer with a DVD drive using windows explorer. The plan is to mail both DVDs at the same time to save on mailing costs. I have completed the graphic design on the DVD labels and they are currently being printed, and will be ready when the DVDs have been replicated.
As for the 3 people who's names didn't show up on the consolidated order list, I have gone back through to check everyone's order as it was sent to me on the "hand written" mailing labels done at the reunion, and with the orders sent directly to me by mail, to be sure no one was overlooked. The list I sent previously matched the paperwork I received. For the three of you who paid, and who's names did not show up on that list, don't worry. We will make sure you receive the DVDs you ordered, and there is no reason to pay again. I will be updating the list with your names by this coming weekend, including a couple additional email orders received in March. If there are any other problems or missing names, please let me or one of the committee members know, and we will make sure it is resolved.
I am grateful to be part of such a wonderful group as you. Hope you are all well and happy!
March 2004:
Mar 1 – Removed all email addresses and phone numbers from the alumni list. It is a known fact that evil people scan the internet for email address and then send out solicitations for pornographic material using those email addresses. If you have received such emails from anyone on this list, please understand that those individuals are not responsible for such material, nor is anyone associated with the reunion.

The latest from Loren Ashcraft on the DVD: Happy New Year Everyone!
Hope that this has been a good holiday season. So that everyone knows what time it is in this New Year I have included a very precise time clock. Just click on the link: http://yugop.com/ver3/stuff/03/fla.html
Here in
Well, the purpose of this
e-mail is to update everyone on the Costa Rica Mission DVDs. Originally
they were scheduled to be done in November. However, a last minute assignment
from work took me to
Last week as I was doing the final work on the DVDs, we had a power surge, and then a blackout. The power was out for only about ten hours. However, there was a power supply problem and two raided hard drives in the computer system (120 Gigabytes each) were burned out. (See photos attached) And of course, that is where the project was stored.
I have been able to recover the scanned slides from backup sources, and DVD#2 (the high resolution slides sent in by everyone) is about ready to be duplicated. However, DVD #1 (the multi-media presentation everyone saw at the reunion) is currently off-line. If I can find the same series hard drive, I should be able to replace the integrated controller boards and recover the files for DVD#1. I have attached photos and information here in case anyone happens to have the same drive and would be willing to replace theirs with a brand new one, free of charge. Of specific interest is the number that comes after the dash in the model number. (See Photo) In the mean time, I have located several possibilities in the area, after checking with about 40 sources. I should know about them by this Saturday, Jan 3rd. I hope Western Digital will be able to get back with me after the holiday break (by next week) should my leads not pan out.
What does this all mean? (No, I haven't skipped the country!)
DVD#2 is headed for duplication next week, and should be ready to ship by Jan 15th.
DVD #1 will be ready for duplication by Jan 15th, if I am successful in recovering all of the files from the hard drive raid array.
If not, the worse case scenario is that I will have to start over on the presentation edit, which will take between 30 and 45 days to complete. (The second time around may even be better.!?!) We are really hoping for the "recovery" option!!
Many "desculpes" for the delay! If it ends up being a total re-edit, you can expect to receive the DVDs in the mail within 45-60 days from now. I was going to send DVD #2 out as a separate mailing, but the cost to send out two packages and two mailings was not feasible. Thanks to everyone for their patience.
I will be sending a consolidated list of all who have requested DVDs later this week, so that everyone can check to verify that they are on the list.
Thanks again,
Loren Ashcraft ashcraft@uswest.net
December:
Sun 28 Dec 2003 – From Tom Cavanaugh: “I called and spoke to Loren. He said this week he
will send out a note to all of us. Evidently, SLC had the biggest storm of 30
years and while he was on the computer he had a fried hard drive...he talked
all the computer talk I don't understand...Bottom line at best he said if he
can get his drive restored this week next week the DVDs will go out. If he has
to restore the drive himself it will take him 150 to 200 hours to do so. The
DVD 2 is ok but all his data of DVD 1 is somehow wrapped up in this drive loss.
Be looking for his message.”
